Police yesterday used batons and tear gas to break up a protest by medical school students, resulting in about 10 injuries. One of the students is reportedly seriously hurt. The students belong to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Khartoum and were protesting the detention of a few doctors who had been arrested for their role in a strike for better wages and conditions. One student said that the aim of the demonstration was to denounce the arrest of the doctors and their brutal treatment. He added that the police broke up the demonstration in front of a university building, used excessive force, and entered the university campus – which is normally forbidden under the terms of a sanctuary law.
