Robbers break into house of former N. Darfur minister and kill his wife

Unidentified gunmen killed the wife of the former minister of agriculture in North Darfur inside their home at dawn on Thursday. They also injured the man’s son. The gunmen took over 25 million old Sudanese pounds and gold jewelry from the home of the former minister, Abdelrahman Ahmed Arja. They fled to an unknown destination. There were four gunmen, according to witnesses, who entered Arja’s house after he had left for the mosque to perform the dawn prayer. Arja is also a leading member of the ex-rebel movement of Minni Minawi.

This incident came 48 hours after another incident, in which gunmen opened fire on Dr. Musa Abdel Ghafar, a leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and former governor candidate in North Darfur. This politician and doctor was attacked on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., wounded and taken to a hospital in critical condition. His car was stolen too. The leader of SPLM in North Sudan, Yasir Arman, described the attack at a press conference in Khartoum. He said the attack occurred “very near the army headquarters,” and called it an assassination attempt.
