Jordanian peacekeepers freed in Darfur
Two Jordanian peacekeepers with UNAMID’s police contingent, who were abducted on Saturday were released yesterday afternoon. The men were abducted by gunmen on 14 August as they were walking from their residence in Nyala to a transport pickup point.The peacekeepers were released in Kass, South Darfur. They were taken to an hospital Nyala where they were reported to be unharmed and in good health. They will later be flown to Khartoum, UNAMID said in a statement yesterday.

The peacekeepers were released in Kass, South Darfur. They were taken to an hospital Nyala where they were reported to be unharmed and in good health. They will later be flown to Khartoum, UNAMID said in a statement yesterday.The release comes following meetings held Monday in Nyala between UNAMID deputy chief Mohamed B. Yonis and a joint government-UNAMID taskforce set up to resolve the matter. “We are very appreciative of the Government’s support in securing their freedom,” said Yonis. State authorities have today pledged to continue working to capture the perpetrators and bring them to trial. Abductors of foreigners in Darfur have never been prosecuted.
