Yasser Arman, secretary general of the northern branch of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, said that he had met with a captured rebel leader who was subjected to torture. Arman, in remarks to journalists after a meeting with the detainee Ibrahim Al Maz, said that he had seen evidence of torture.Almaz, a top-level JEM official, was captured in West Darfur in January. Soon after Almaz’s capture, another JEM source told Radio Dabanga that security forces had broken Almaz’s hand.
According to Arman, Almaz is kept blindfolded. He is shackled at all times, even during prayers. Arman argued that since Almaz was arrested during military operations, he should be considered a prisoner of war, and must be treated as prisoners of war in accordance with the Geneva Convention.
