The state security service confiscated the newspaper Al Midan on Sunday, for the fourth time in two weeks, in violation of the interim constitution of the country that guarantees press freedom.Al Midan, the newspaper which acts as the Sudanese Communist Party’s (SCP’s) mouthpiece, had been confiscated earlier this month.
The Sudanese Journalists Network (SJN) expressed condemnation of the government move in a statement released on Saturday. It also condemned the Sudanese National Council for Press Council’s decision to suspend publication of six sport news dailies in Sudan on Saturday.
A number of journalists have been put to trial by the government recently under the garb of committing abuses.
The SJN demanded the press council to repeal its decision in view of the freedom of expression guaranteed by the interim constitution and international instruments ratified by Sudan.
