Darfuri refugees in Chad make demands
Say they will not agree to voluntary repatriation unless their conditions are metDarfuri refugees in Jebel refugee camp in eastern Chad said on Thursday that they would agree to voluntary repatriation only when their conditions are met.Security in their home towns, persecution of perpetrators in Darfur, disarmament of Janjaweed, expulsion of new settlers from their land, compensation at individual and collective levels and meeting basic services were some of the demands made by the refugees.The meeting of Darfuri refugees in Jebel camp on Thursday included over 50 leaders from various camps in eaastern Chad, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the National Committee for Reception of Refugees (NCRR).A sheikh (local leader) from Jebel camp Daood Abdul Rasool told Radio Dabanga that the representatives of refugees were asked some questions by the other participants. They were: would you agree for voluntary repatriation to Sudan, when do you wish to return, do you wish to return to your home town or other areas, do you wish to return to Sudan or stay in Chad or be resettled in a third country.After the meeting Daood assured the gathering that the refugees would not return to Sudan unless their conditions are met.
