Refugees in Chad won’t return
Say they will only go back to Darfur after their needs are met by the Sudanese governmentA committee of Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad decided on Sunday not to return to Darfur until they have been provided with security and other amenities in their home towns.Representatives of Ardimay, Abu Nabak and Tolom camps also demanded that the perpetrators of war crimes in Darfur be prosecuted. “We want individual and collective compensation. And new settlers in our areas should be expelled,” a member of the committee told Radio Dabanga in an interview.He added that the committee had reached these decisions after they had met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and UN High Commissioner for Refugee Reception (UNHCRR) on Thursday.The committee also met with representatives of the Sudanese government who told them that the conditions in Darfur were suitable for return of refugees. The government informed the committee that nearly 4,000 refugees had returned home.However, the representatives of the refugees said that not one refugee had returned to Darfur from these three camps.
