Government signs agreement with mining company

Abdel Baki Jilani, the Sudanese Minister of Mines, disclosed the presence of gold, diamonds, uranium and copper, along with other minerals, in Darfur during an interview with Radio Dabanga. The minister compared the region to “a mini Democratic Republic of Congo” due to the region’s abundant presence of minerals of all sorts.  Mr. Jilani also announced that an initial agreement had been signed yesterday between the government and the Mahesh for Mining Ldt. Company. The Indian organization will be given the squares SD11 and SD13 in South Darfur and Nyala for exploration. “The company will first perform a geological exploration of the area, “he told Radio Dabanga, “and assess the presence of raw materials and the economic feasibility of the project. We will then discuss with a Government representative the repartition of the shares between the company and the Republic of Sudan.”

The minister ensure that the company committed itself to the implementation of a socially responsible project, and that it would provide a variety of social services such as access to health, education and water next to the employment of citizens from the region.
