Prisoner strike ends with death and injury
The strike of 52 prisoners sentenced to death in Shala prison, has been violently ended with the death of one prisoner and the injury of nine others. The government of North Darfur announced that the incident took place when the prisoners refused to leave their cells to be executed. The governor Osman Kibir said that the prison force were trying to carry out talks for two days, but the prisoners were unwilling to let any police come near them. The prisoners allegedly attacked the gates by throwing stones. This led to a heavy handed response by the police, using tear-gas and batons, causing the death of 27 year old Ibrahim Osman Adam. The governor in the press conference denied the prisoners having any ties to the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and said that the government will investigate on the matter.
