Kidnappers demand ransom for Italian doctor
The captors of Italian aid worker Francesco Azzara, have demanded a ransom of half a million Sudanese pounds for his safe release, a source told Radio Dabanga. One of the kidnappers, refusing to be named, told a newspaper in Khartoum that Azzara’s health was deteriorating. The doctor, working for Medical Emergency Relief International (MERI) was kidnapped in August in Nyala, South Darfur. He is being held in an unknown location in Northwest Darfur. The source stated that the kidnappers are refusing to have any mediation with the government of Sudan. They are only willing to directly contact the Italian embassy in Khartoum, to arrange the ransom for the doctors immediate release.
