Shooting in Western Darfur
On Monday four people were killed when two government affiliated militias held a gunbattle in Kidepo village, north east of Zalingei in Western Darfur. They had disagreed on how to share out looted goods between them, a witness told Radio Dabanga. Two villagers, Zechariah Hamid Isaac (55) and Yahia Mohamed Adam (60) were caught in the cross fire and killed. The two dead gunmen remain unidentified. The militias reached the village when they were trying to take cover from fighting. Villagers came out to see what was happening and two of the gunmen ran off. The other two were caught and handed over to authorities by the villagers, said the witness. Some of the villagers panicked and escaped to a nearby village. They are fearful of reprisals by the armed group for handing over two of the militia to the authorities. More violence in Zalingei IDP camp On Wednesday two IDPs were killed in Hamidiya camp in Zalingei. Local militias set on fire some of the shelters, the source told Radio dabanga. Two elderly men named Mohammed (82) and Adam Idris (73) tried to put the fires out to rescue the shelters. They were shot on the spot by the militias. A military policeman was also reported as being killed on his way home in Zalingei. He was shot seven times, in the head, chest and neck, stated the source. The perpetrators and motive of the attack are not known.
