46 years later: no results for Malha agricultural project
Ismail Mohamed Juma, member of the National Council for Malha locality in North Darfur said the Um Bayada agricultural project will be closed down if it is not rolled out. The project was scheduled to begin in 1965, and produce sorghum, wheat, vegetables and animal feed, but as yet has seen no activity carried out on the ground, and nothing produced. A source said over 12 billion Sudanese pounds have been spent. Juma denied in an interview with Radio Dabanga that corruption or waste was the problem. He said the money had been spent over the years on studies and research as well as new buildings, agricultural machinery and water wells. He said if nothing is produced this year he will take the matter to Parliament and demand the project is stopped. The project was assigned 100,000 acres to support the social and economic aspirations of residents of Malha locality.
