Residents complain of rising food prices

Citizens of Kabkabiya in North Darfur and Mershing in South Darfur have complained of the miserable conditions due to the rising costs of consumer goods. Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that a pound of sugar has reached three Sudanese pounds, a bottle of cooking oil 15 SDG, a kilo of lamb at 30 SDG and a kilo of beef 25 SDG. They said the majority of families are surviving on one meal a day, which is expected to cause serious problems and malnutrition amongst those particularly vulnerable such as mothers, children and the elderly. They added that there are a lot of families that have also lost their sources of income and are fearing the spread of diseases, particularly as many cannot afford to buy medicines. The witnesses said Khartoum is to be held responsible for their current situation bu supporting militias that terrorised and displaced them from their villages and deprived them of their farmlands. They appealed to the UN to intervene to help them before the situation deteriorates further.
