Updated US travel warning to Sudan
According to a travel warning issued on 7 September by the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs, American citizens are urged to “avoid all travel to the Darfur region of Sudan (…)”. The US informed that the level of terrorist threat, particularly in Darfur, remains critical. In addition, it is stated, violent incidents between various armed groups and the Sudanese military forces erupt with little notice in the Darfur region, along the border between Chad and Sudan, and in areas on the border with South Sudan. Travelers are also warned about the high threat of kidnappings, armed robberies, home invasions, and carjackings in Darfur. Besides, it is pointed out that the Government of Sudan has limited capacity to deter crime in the region, where “Janjaweed militia and heavily armed Darfuri rebel groups are known to have carried out criminal attacks against foreigners.”
