‘Committees to investigate Adela locality’s issues with oil companies’
The acting Governor of East Darfur, Abdul Majid Alzair, announced a decision on Thursday, 7 February, which includes the formation of two committees charged with resolving the issues of Shig Elteib area residents in Adela locality.Abdul Majid, who is also Minister of Urban Planning, announced that the first committee will be led by the Minister of Agriculture, Mastour Adam Abdul Majid, charged with inventory and investigating the damages caused by the oil exploration companies working at Zurga Um Hadida oil field. The committee will also be charged with discussing employment issues, which is scheduled to start next Tuesday. In addition, Abdul Majid revealed that the second committee will be led by the commissioner of Adila locality and representatives of the police, security forces as well as the army. This committee will be charged with reviewing and supervising the security situation and investigating the reasons behind the protests and arrests of three residents of Shig Elteib area on Thursday.Thousands of residents from Adela locality and neighboring villages gathered on Thursday in a peaceful protest demanding compensation from the oil companies working on their lands, during which three residents were arrested by the security services.Radio Dabanga file photo
