Students in South Darfur protest against relocation of teachers

Female students from the Gireida Secondary School, South Darfur, staged a march on Thursday, protesting against the decision, reportedly by Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) to relocate five teachers out of the locality. One pupil told Radio Dabanga that they, together with their parents, on Thursday morning started a march from Gireida Secondary School to the locality’s headquarters. The protesters shouted slogans denouncing the relocation of teacher Mohamed Musa Daoud, submitted a memorandum to the commissioner of Gireida locality demanding Daoud’s return to the school. They announced they would stage into an open-ended strike until their demand is met. The pupil added that the commissioner threatened to indefinitely close the school in case the pupils insisted on their demand. At the same time, the teachers at the school announced in a statement they would stop teaching, effective next Sunday until the relocation of Mohamed Musa Daoud, Ibrahim Bush, and three more of their colleagues is cancelled. They denounced the intervention of the locality’s commissioner in internal affairs of the school and described the decision as a political one.
