Darfur tribal leaders call for peace in ‘tasteless’ Eid el Adha
On the occasion of Eid el Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) a number of citizens have expressed their wishes for peace, development, and stability in the coming year, in which all Sudanese will “sit around the table to solve their problems in a manner satisfactory to everyone.” A displaced woman from the Abu Surouj camp in West Darfur sent her wishes to her family in Kelingo camp via Radio Dabanga. She added that the feast of this year has “no taste because of the economic crisis and the price hikes, the instable security situation, the demonstrators killed, injured or still detained and terrorised in the prisons.” She expressed her hope that all prisoners and detainees will be released soon. Mohamed Zain of the Darfur Students Association of the University of Khartoum congratulated all the Sudanese, especially the people of Darfur, on the occasion of the feast. He hopes that “the coming year will witness solutions to all the problems in Sudan and that Darfur will enjoy security, stability and development.”He added that this feast does not differ much from the ones in the past: “generous people continue to be generous.” Yet, their abilities to purchase a sheep have sharply diminished. “And this year the Students Support Fund has not provided the students with even a bag of candies.” Speaking to Radio Dabanga, the Sultan of Dar Masalit in West Darfur, Saad Bahreldin, expressed his wishes for all the displaced Darfurians and refugees: “That peace and security will prevail throughout Darfur and the whole of Sudan.” He appealed to the Darfurians to stay committed to tolerance, to unite and work together in order to repair the social fabric in Darfur and realise real peace. The Amir of the Salamat tribe, brigadier (Rtd) Mohamed Bashir wishes that in the coming year peace and security will be realised throughout Darfur and Sudan. He hopes, as he told Radio Dabanga, that “reconciliation and peace, love and harmony” will prevail among all the tribes of Darfur. File photo
