Militiamen impose ‘protection fees’ on Central Darfur farmers
Militiamen have reportedly imposed “fees” on farmers in Nierteti locality, Central Darfur, before allowing them to harvest their crops. A farmer told Radio Dabanga that “government-backed militias” imposed a fee of SDG50 ($11) and 9kg of sorghum per acre in exchange for their “protection” during harvesting. He said that the farmers were forced to pay in order not to lose their crops, as the government refuses to protect them. Moreover, this year’s agricultural season has not been very good, the farmer added.
