Acute drinking water crisis in North Darfur camps
The Doumi, Sibag El Kheil, and Karkara camps for the displaced in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, are suffering from an acute drinking water crisis owing to lack of fuel. One of the camp sheikhs reported to Radio Dabanga that the engine pumping water to three camps stopped working at the beginning of December. The Association of Small-Scale Farmers could not afford to pay for the fuel needed. The employees at the water pump station have not received their salaries either. The residents of the camps are suffering badly, the sheikh said, because they are unable to buy drinking water from commercial providers. The commercial price of two jerry cans of water has reached SDG0.50 while a barrel of water now costs SDG2 ($0.35). File photo by O.
