Militia attacks displace more South Darfuris
Daily attacks, allegedly by elements of the Rapid Support Forces led by ‘Hemeti’ (Mohamed Hamdan) on villages south and south-east of Nyala, capital of South Darfur, have resulted in a steady influx of newly displaced persons to El Salam and Kalma camps. Dr Saleh Issa Mohamed, the General Secretary of Kalma camp, told Radio Dabanga of the arrival of 950 families on Tuesday followed more than 700 families on Wednesday from the affected areas of Um Gunja, Sani Deleiba and the surrounding villages. Mohamed explained that many had lost all their belongings. He stressed that no aid has yet been provided for the newly displaced, who are currently residing in square 8 of Kalma camp. Some 75 families have arrived at El Salam camp on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Sheikh of El Salam camp told Radio Dabanga that the newly displaced are living in the open in square 10 without water or food. The acting UN resident coordinator of development and humanitarian affairs in Khartoum, Adnan Khan has expressed his deep concern about the reports of thousands of people being forced to flee their homes in Um Gunja area in South Darfur. He said the recent fighting in the area caused more than 15,000 people to flee their homes, and confirmed that the majority have taken refuge in Kalma and El Salam camps.
