Drug-resistant TB cases in Sudan exceed 200,000

There are 201,463 drug-resistant tuberculosis cases in Sudan.  The director of National Programme for Combating Tuberculosis, Dr Hiba Kamal, reported in a press conference in Khartoum on Thursday that 201,463 drug-resistant tuberculosis cases were recorded. About 40,000 additional cases are expected to be discovered in a wide-scaled campaign conducted in the all states of Sudan.Sudan has been classified as the second country infected with the disease in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The number of the drug-resistant tuberculosis cases in the five Darfur states has increased, Kamal said, owing to the interruption of the treatment, taking six to eight months, by armed conflicts, violence, and displacement. The National Programme for Combating Tuberculosis is also combating the reluctance of health staff to work in tuberculosis centres.
