Darfur tribal heads argue conditions for successful reconciliation
The head of the Shura Council of Rizeigat tribes and Minister of State at the Bureau of Decentralised Governance, Ali Majok El Mumin, has asserted that “the success of any reconciliation conference between the Rizeigat and Ma’aliya tribes depends on the realisation of a number of conditions at the top”. One of these is not to grant any Hakura or chieftainship to the Ma’aliya within the territory of the Rizeigat. Another is that the Ma’aliya should not be granted a locality based on ethnicity or force-of-arms in the Kileikl Abu Salama area, Abu Karinka locality, in East Darfur. In a statement, the Shura Council of the Ma’aliya condemned El Moumin’s remarks, describing them as “irresponsible, calling for sedition, and fuelling the conflict between the two tribes with offensive words”. The statement accused El Mumin of “standing against the State’s orientation and wearing the robe of tribalism”. It stresses that “the Ma’aliya are waiting for a decisive action from the State in consideration of the tribe’s dignity”.
