Unamid denied access to newly displaced in Kutum, North Darfur

More than 10,000 newly displaced in the Um Gozein mountains in Kutum locality, North Darfur, are in dire need of aid. The people sought refuge in the mountains when the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces attacked their villages southeast of Kutum town in March. “Representatives of Unamid told us on Sunday that the Sudanese security service refuses to allow them access to the area,” a sheikh reported to Radio Dabanga from Um Gozein. The sheikh said that diseases are spreading, in particular among the children and the infirm. “There is not enough water available, let alone food.”  He demanded from the UN Security Council and the international community to pressure the authorities to allow the supply of aid to the newly displaced “who are living in the open, under the hot summer sun.” File photo: Newly displaced near the Unamid team site in Korma, North Darfur, 25 March 2014 (Owies Elfaki/Unamid) Related:North Darfur’s Kutum controlled by militias (15 May 2014) Displaced without aid, security in Kutum, North Darfur (2 May 2014)Thousands of North Darfur villagers flee to areas short of water (1 April 2014) At least 15 villages raided in Kutum, North Darfur (31 March 2014) RSF attacks in Baashim, North Darfur (30 March 2014) Attacks in North Darfur’s Kutum displace more than 30,000 (17 March 2014)
