Sudanese authorities seize El Jareeda newspaper
The Sudanese security apparatus on Sunday confiscated the print run of El Jareeda newspaper. El Jareeda Editor, Idris El Douma, told Radio Dabanga that the confiscation of the newspaper comes at a time when the government is inaugurating a media conference where ‘freedom’ is listed in the agenda. He remarked that “the confiscation is evidence of the erosion of fundamental freedoms; which aim at exercising economic pressure on the newspapers to supress them”. Douma added that “this confirms the lack of sincerity of the government’s words”. He said that he contacted the National Intelligence and Security Service to ascertain the reasons for confiscating the newspaper; however, they did not explain, telling him they have stopped the newspaper’s columnist Zuhair El Sarraj for an indefinite term.
