Cart owners strike in West Darfur

Owners of horse and donkey carts in Murnei, West Darfur State, complain that they are stripped of their income by the authorities. They went on strike more than a week ago in protest against the large fees and fines. The West Darfur State authorities have increased the license fee for a cart to SDG215 ($38), a cart owner told Radio Dabanga from Murnei, the capital of Kereinik locality. “When we cannot show a license, we are fined with SDG100 ($17.50).” The cart owner explained that since the Murnei water station broke down, they bring water from the valleys of Azum, Barre and Jamjoum to the town. “As most of us did not obtain the expensive licence, we were fined SDG100 each. We have protested, to no avail. So we decided to go stop working more than a week ago, as we were losing money anyhow.” He called upon the West Darfur State authorities to reduce the fees and fines, and “stop chasing us”.
