Students beaten in Sudan’s capital

Students attending gatherings at the universities of Shambat and El Nilein in Khartoum were violently dispersed by security forces on Thursday. One of the students told Radio Dabanga that security forces, together with what he called “the students’ gang of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP)” assaulted Darfuri students when they were attending a gathering at the Faculty of Agriculture at Shambat University in Khartoum North.“They beat the students with batons and plastic wires. Some of them were seriously wounded. Idris Ahmed Mohamed had to be transferred to the emergency department of Omdurman hospital.” At El Nilein University in Khartoum, another student gathering was attacked in the same way on the same day. “Several students were injured, among them Mudasir Ahmed El Mirghani, El Nur Arees Mohamed Arees and El Fadul Abdallah El Fadul Haroun”, the source reported.The students had gathered to discuss the university management’s decision to deny permission to students unable to pay tuition fees, to sit for exams.
