Newborn babies dying in El Malha locality, North Darfur

In El Malha locality, North Darfur, the number of newborn babies dying of an infection of the umbilical cord is increasing. A medical source reported to Radio Dabanga that during the past four months, two to three newborn babies have died each week. “They die within one to three days after the start of the inflammation.” A medical team from El Fasher, capital of North Darfur State, visited El Malha town last week, where they conducted tests, and took samples. “They returned to El Fasher without a diagnose,” the medical source said. She appealed to the Sudanese and North Darfur State authorities to accelerate the issuance of the test results, “in order to find a treatment, and contain the number of deaths”.
