Security situation deteriorating in Sirba, West Darfur

The residents of the camps for the displaced in Sirba locality, West Darfur, have not been able to enjoy the Eid El Fitr, as the security situation has deteriorated significantly. “Insecurity increased in the region, shortly before the Eid, in particular in the areas between Saraf Jidad, Tendelti, Armankul, and the capital El Geneina,” the coordinator of the Sirba camps told Radio Dabanga. “The displaced who do have some savings, did not dare to leave the camps to buy sweets or Eid clothes for their children.” In North Darfur, the coordinator of the camps in Kabkabiya locality also pointed to the rampant insecurity. On the occasion of the Eid El Fitr, the feast marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, he congratulated all the displaced and refugees, and asked “the Almighty that peace and stability may prevail in Darfur, and all over Sudan”. He expressed his hope that by next year’s Eid a comprehensive peace has been realised in Sudan, and that “all displaced and refugees will be able to safely return to their homes”. The coordinator demanded from the authorities to provide security for the displaced and civilians in Darfur, “as the militias are still threatening and assaulting the people, denying them access to their farmlands, amid a severe deterioration of the economic situation, and the huge rise of living costs”.
