Darfur rains destroy homes, damage farms

759 homes broke down entirely, and 2,674 houses were damaged by the rains in four West Darfur localities last week. Floods spoiled large tracts of farmlands in West and South Darfur. During a visit of the federal Minister of Interior Affairs to El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, the Governor of West Darfur State, Haidar Galokuma, stated that apart from the destruction of 759 homes and the damaging of 2,674 houses, 88 government facilities collapsed, and 253 were damaged. He also said that 50,000 acres of farmland were damaged by the recent torrents and ensuing floods. Interior Minister Lt. Col. Ismat Abdel Rahman told reporters in El Geneina that the West Darfur State authorities had fully informed him about the size of the losses in the localities of El Geneina, Sirba, Foro Baranga, and Kulbus due to heavy rainfall. In South Darfur, more than 150 acres of farmland were spoiled north of Kass town on Friday. Farmers told Radio Dabanga that the rains that fell south of Kass led to the destruction of 17 water engines.
