Sudan women politicians call for detainees’ release
The Sudanese Coalition of Women Politicians has called for the immediate release of detainees Samia Kiir and Maryam El Sadig El Mahdi, and demanded the right to visit them in the prisons of El Nahud, West Kordofan, and Omdurman, the sister-city of Khartoum. In a memorandum delivered to the National Human Rights Commission in Khartoum on Sunday, the women politicians expressed their concern about the “unlawful, unconstitutional, and repeated detentions of in particular women politicians”. Faten Fadul, a representative of the Coalition, told Radio Dabanga from Khartoum that “the oppression of the opposition parties by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), and the detention of the parties’ leaders, constitute not only a violation of the law and the Constitution, but is also contrary to Sudanese customs”. Samia Kiir, Secretary-General of the Sudanese Congress Party, was detained in En Nahud on 11 July under the emergency law in the state. The order for her detention was issued by the West Kordofan state government. Dr Maryam El Sadig El Mahdi, the Co-Deputy President of the National Umma Party (NUP), was held by NISS officers on 12 August at Khartoum Airport. She arrived from France, where the NUP had signed the Paris Declaration with the Sudan Revolutionary Front, calling for a comprehensive solution for the crises in the country.
