‘Government agrees to monthly pay salaries’: South Darfur union

The lessons that students have missed during the four weeks that teachers and other staff members of the Ministry of Education in South Darfur were on strike, should be compensated. The Union of Education Workers in South Darfur stated it is considering ways of compensating, two days after it “achieved more than 90 percent of the workers’ demands” to the government. The Union announced the lift of the strike in all South Darfur localities, after it reached an agreement with the Sudanese government and the workers received their monthly entitlements and arrears. Ahmed Ibrahim Mohamed Khair, the Secretary-General of the Union, told Radio Dabanga that this agreement achieved more than 90 percent of the workers’ demands. Mohamed Khair explained that the government agreed to pay the salaries of July to those South Darfur localities where the payments to the educational staff have been delayed, in addition to the payment of the August salaries. The accord also stipulates the monthly payment of salaries to the education workers in all localities as of this month. The educational staff of South Darfur state embarked on a strike more than four weeks ago, in protest against the non-payment of their entitlements accumulated since 2007, amounting to SDG75,000 ($13,100) a person, a member of the state’s Workers’ Union told Radio Dabanga on 16 August.
