UN HRs Council to discuss Sudan; Change Now releases list of detainees
The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will discuss the report of the UN Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Sudan today. The Sudanese activists’ movement, Change Now, released a press statement today, listing the names of 48 people detained by the security apparatus in Khartoum since 18 September. The UNHRC will discuss today (Wednesday) the 2014 report of Prof. Mashood Adebayo Baderin, the UN independent expert on the situation of human rights in Sudan, Abdel Bagi Jibril, director of the Darfur Relief and Documentation Centre (DRDC), based in Geneva, Switzerland, reported to Radio Dabanga. Jibril predicted the issuance of a resolution to “be tougher on Sudan”. “During an organisational meeting on 25 August, the US Ambassador stated that there is a need to see a stronger resolution reflecting cases of bombardments of civilians and killings of peaceful protesters, as well as to significantly strengthen the Council’s response to the human rights conditions on the ground.” “A number of countries has demanded to relist Sudan again under Article IV, concerning the close monitoring of gross human rights abuses. Other countries stressed the need of sending stronger messages to the Sudanese government.” “The Council will probably issue a decision this week about the appointment of a special rapporteur on the human rights in Sudan,” he added. Change Now The Sudanese activists’ movement, Change Now, released a press statement today, listing the names of 48 people who were detained since 18 September by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), in an attempt by the authorities to prevent the organisation of commemoration ceremonies for the victims of the 2013 September protests in Khartoum. In the statement, that can be downloaded below, the Change Now activists state that the regime is trying to survive” with “false claims” about a dialogue. “We reaffirm that the survival of this regime is pushing Sudan” towards “disintegration, destruction and devastating chaos”. The Change Now activists call on all Sudanese forces “to prepare for a long and final battle with this regime in all the streets and villages and cities of Sudan”.
