‘Security apparatus is ruling Sudan’: Umma Party, Unionists withdraw from govt.
The National Umma Party (NUP) and the Reform Now Movement (RNM) have reiterated their condemnation of the speech of President Omar Al Bashir, delivered at the general convention of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in Khartoum on Saturday. The mainstream Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has announced its withdrawal from the government. NUP Secretary General Sara Nugdallah described the speech of Al Bashir at the general convention of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in Khartoum on Saturday, as “irresponsible and scandalous”. “The speech not only consisted of contradictory statements, but showed a spiteful president. It seems he is jealous of the opposition forces, because the Paris Declaration is preventing him from continuing to manipulate the political forces in the country.” Nugdallah stressed that the speech confirmed that the National Intelligence and Security Apparatus (NISS) is ruling Sudan. “Political decisions are made by a headstrong security apparatus, oppressing the population, and frustrating political developments. The NISS and El Bashir do not have any legal right to prevent NUP president, El Sadig El Mahdi, from returning to his country. “All in all the speech demonstrated again the barbaric mentality that governs us with iron and fire; that has led to the secession of South Sudan, the need to have foreign peacekeepers in Darfur and Abyei, and the issuance of UN Security Council Resolution 61 against Sudan.” Political parties exploited Dr Ghazi Salaheldin El Atabani, the chairman of RNM, a new political party formed by NCP dissidents last year, called the speech of President Omar Al Bashir a “negative development”. The president’s address “confirmed the worst fears of the Sudanese people”. “The National Dialogue was initiated for the interests of the ruling party only. The NCP will continue to follow its agenda without a real dialogue, and the April 2015 elections will be held on NCP’s conditions for the sake of the NCP. The government initiated the Nation Dialogue only to impress the UN and the international community, exploiting the political parties that joined the dialogue.” Democratic Unionist PartyThe mainstream DUP, headed by Mawlana Mohamed Osman El Mirghani, has announced its “immediate withdrawal” from the government. The party said in a press statement on Tuesday that the NCP is not serious about the National Dialogue. “The NCP initiated the dialogue to gain time to solve its internal and external problems.” File photo: Parade of NISS officers in Khartoum, 3 December 2013 (Sudan Tribune) Related: ‘Al Bashir’s speech setback for National Dialogue’: Sudan opposition (30 September 2014) Sudan’s opposition ‘unimpressed’ by Al Bashir speech (28 September 2014) ‘Sudan regime keeps to its principles’: Al Bashir (28 September 2014)
