WFP voucher programme stops in El Neem camp, East Darfur
The UN World Food Programme has announced that its milling voucher programme in East Darfur’s El Neem IDP camp had stopped effective 31 October. According to the weekly bulletin of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan, the programme, which started in July 2010, had been serving just over 51,000 displaced people in the camp. The milling voucher programme aimed at improving the level of food consumption. It intended to reduce the need for people who receive aid to sell part of their assistance to cover the cost of milling, reducing of consumable food available. However, the increasing costs of milling and the reduction of food rations have reduced the cost-effectiveness of this system. In August 2014, WFP announced its plans to phase-out the milling voucher programmes in South and East Darfur states.
