16 Darfur rebels sentenced to 13 years

On Monday the Special Court in El Fasher, capital of North Darfur convicted 16 members of the armed movements for charges of violating laws on criminal association, arms and ammunition, and organising criminal networks. The court sentenced each defendant to 13 years’ imprisonment. The men were accused of ambushing a commercial convoy moving from Nyala in South Darfur to Zalingei in Central Darfur in April. The armed forces managed to arrest them and hand them over to the Darfur public prosecutor Yasser Ahmed Mohammed. Speaking from his residence in El Fasher, Mohammed said that the defendants all had the opportunity to a legal defence by senior lawyers. The Prosecutor said that “this is a qualitative case that transformed military attacks to criminal proceedings”. File photo Related: Transport suspended in Central Darfur (5 October 2014)
