Nearly 18,000 newly displaced need aid in Um Baru, North Darfur
Mohamed Ahmed Minawi Digeish, independent MP for Karnoi and Um Baru localities, says that according to the latest counts conducted by native administration leaders and school teachers, there are 17,743 newly displaced in the locality in need of aid.
“The data was handed to the Um Baru Unamid team site. OCHA (the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, RD) has formally requested approval for the establishment of a new camp in the locality.”

Digeish called via Dabanga on the authorities to accelerate the issuance of the approval, “in order to allow the provision of relief to those affected by the widespread attacks in Um Baru”.
On 28 January, Unicef flew in emergency supplies to the newly displaced in the locality, which has been targeted by government militias and the Sudanese Air Force since 8 January, purportedly to rid the area of rebel fighters. The MP stressed to Dabanga at the time that there were no rebels present in the area.
