Sudanese govt. to provide aid to Berti in North Darfur

The State Minister of the Sudanese Ministry of Welfare and Social Security has announced that the government will support the people of the Berti tribe, who were displaced by Ziyadiya militia attacks on their villages in Mellit and El Kuma localities in March.

State Minister Kamal Hassan Ali headed a federal delegation that visited El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, on Sunday, to assess the humanitarian situation of the affected.

Speaking to the press in El Fasher, he said that the delegation would provide relief items including 500 (100kg) sacks of sorghum, 300 tents, 200 plastic sheets and blankets, and clothing. They would also send medical teams to both localities.

The government of North Darfur announced on Sunday that it will support “more than 7,400 Berti families from 16 villages with a six-month emergency plan, to meet their humanitarian needs”. It will also deploy a technical team to rehabilitate the medical clinics, and repair the destroyed water sources.

Members of the paramilitary Border Guards and Central Reserve Police (Abu Tira), belonging to the Ziyadiya tribe, launched several attacks on Berti villages in Mellit and El Kuma locality in March. According to reports from Mellit, 48,819 people were affected by the violence. 7,409 families were displaced. 106 villagers were killed, and 191 houses went up in flames.
