‘More schistosomiasis cases in South Darfur’: official

Some localities in South Darfur have witnessed a rise in schistosomiasis cases, according to state officials.

The director of the administration that fights against malaria and schistosomiasis, Jaffar Abdallah, has acknowledged that there is a rise in the prevalence of the disease in some southern localities. It is a parasitic disease caused by trematode flatworms.

Abdallah claimed that the prevalence has amounted to “42%, according to surveys in 2012.

“In Shalal Goz El Radoom, it amounted to 92%. Furthermore, 55% in Um Janah and 8% in Um Zaifah in East Jebel Marra.”

He announced that the start of the campaign against the risks of schistosomiasis  and intestinal worms will “last for a month” and target fifteen of all localities, being Kutum, Ed El Fursan, Tullus, Buram and El Mardoom.
