Settlers shoot farmer in West Darfur
A resident of Um Gireinat camp for the displaced in West Darfur was shot by militant settlers on Monday.
Speaking to Radio Dabanga, the coordinator of the Sirba camps reported that Kaltoum Mohamed Ishag was tending her farm when new settlers suddenly fired at her. “She sustained a broken leg.”
The coordinator said that new settlers frequently attack displaced farmers in the area, to chase them away. “The settlers have already seized large tracts of land in the region. This is disastrous, as agriculture has become the main provider of food since relief organisations were expelled from Darfur six years ago.”
