Second attack on university by students, detentions in Omdurman

Students who support the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid (SLM-MM) reported that National Congress Party students, backed by security forces, raided the campus of a university in Omdurman on Sunday morning. The National Intelligence and Security Service detained three activists at Um Bada area in Omdurman that day.

The incident in El Ahliya University follows an earlier attack by NCP students and security forces last Thursday, during which eight students were shot and seriously injured.

In Khartoum, UPF, the political faction of the SLM-MM, said that students supporting the ruling NCP were backed by security agents when they raided the campus of El Ahliya in Omdurman on Sunday morning. In a press statement, the students claim the security agents opened fire into the air, leading to the evacuation of the university so students could not attend an activity organised by the UPF.

The statement claimed that the NCP students targeted other students on their race and their areas of origin.

The security forces also detained university student Mohamed Abdelkarim and took him in a Hilux vehicle to an unknown destination.

Three activists detained

An activist told Radio Dabanga from Khartoum that on Sunday, security agents took activist and engineer Mohamad Osman El Mahasi, El Jareeda newspaper journalist Iman Ali, and activist of the Federal Democratic Unionist Party Rahma Ma’toug into custody.

He said that the NISS released Rahma Ma'toug but asked her to come to the building of the security at 7 am on Monday.

The activist demanded the NISS to immediately release the three detainees. He appealed to the civil society organisations to intervene for their release.
