More farms destroyed in North Darfur’s Kutum
Abbala herdsmen continued to release their livestock on farmlands in Kutum locality last week.
Farmers living in areas north and east of Kutum town told Radio Dabanga that militant Abbala tribesmen continued to expel them from their lands by force of arms last week.
“They attacked farms near Karkawi, Kassab, Beeri. El Gubba, Nady, Korkei, and Tora from Tuesday to Friday. The grazing destroyed large tracts of farmland and a number of orchards in these areas,” one of them reported.
Because of the late and less than average rainfall in various parts of Sudan, there is less and poorer quality pasture available. As a result, herders increasingly attack farmers and drive their livestock onto cultivated farms.
The livestock is being migrated southward towards agricultural land earlier than usual, the Famine Early Warning Systems (FEWS Net) reported in September.
