Flood victims without shelter in Sudan’s Red Sea
Thousands of people have been displaced as nearly 500 houses completely collapsed during the flash floods and rains that hit Haya locality in Red Sea state two weeks ago.
The latest counts on the damages in Shedyat area concluded that 462 houses were destroyed when floods from the mountain tops swept through the villages. Cattle drowned and residents, beside an estimated 3,000 people who have lost their homes, lost many of their possessions in the floods.
Sources in the area said that the displaced live out in the open in Shedyat because of a shortage of shelters, except for a mosque. There is a scarcity of drinking water for both people and animals.
Dr El Fateh Rabee, director-general of the Red Sea Health Ministry, told reporters on 24 October that health teams are on their way to the affected areas in Haya. “The damage was so big because the houses and other buildings in the area are very fragile,” he said.
800 homes damaged by rains in Central Darfur
An estimated 2,000 people in Central Darfur’s Zalingei locality whose homes were damaged by heavy rains are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the government’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC).
On 20 October, an inter-agency mission visited the affected villages of Kurgo, Kankulei and Golba and found that 86 households (about 430 people) are in need of emergency shelter and household supplies, the United Nations’ humanitarian office (OCHA) reported in its latest weekly bulletin.
In Deleig in Wadi Salih locality, heavy rains reportedly destroyed 405 homes, affecting an estimated further 2,000 people. Strong winds destroyed the nutrition centre in the Deleig camp for the displaced, run by the International Medical Corps, and rehabilitation of the nutrition centre is currently ongoing.
