Bread shortage: ‘West Kordofan schools to close’

People in West Kordofan complained about a bread shortage for three consecutive days on Monday. “Schools are about to be closed because of the lack of flour.”

The agents of the Sudanese flour distribution company Sega confirmed to the residents in Lagawa that it has not sent the required flour quota for this month, which has resulted in a shortage of bread.

A resident told Radio Dabanga yesterday that the lack of flour supplies has created “panic” in Lagawa, “as even schools are about to be closed because of the shortage”.

In a related event, authorities in El Muglad arrested Amara El Sir and Salah Ahmed Omar on Monday, as they participated in a protest to demand rights for the West Kordofan region.

Traders released

Sudanese security forces released seven traders who were arrested earlier his month in El Meiram of West Kordofan State, along the border with South Sudan. Radio Tamazuj reported yesterday that the men had been held without contact from their families.

“We were seven traders on board of three trucks carrying goods, fuel, and flour on our way to South Sudan before security agents arrested us in El Adam area,” one trader said. He said they were transported to El Meiram where they spent a week in police and security detention centers before being transferred to National Security offices in Khartoum Bahri where they were held another ten days.

He said the security forces tied them up and beat them and treated them inhumanely while taking them to Khartoum. The trader said the authorities confiscated the goods they were transporting and took the vehicles to their owners in El Foula town.
