SPLM-N areas ‘liberated’ by Sudan army

The Sudanese army claims that is has managed to “liberate several sites from the grip of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) in South Kordofan”, during operations it launched this week.

In a press statement yesterday, Sudanese army spokesman Brig. Ahmed Khalifa El Shami said that the government troops have liberated several areas early this week. He added that the army caused the rebels great loss of life, and that the materiel seized and destroyed is still being counted.

The spokesman acknowledged that there were deaths and injuries among the government forces without providing details. The affected areas were Mardis, El Labo, Kuton, Agab, Karkarya and Biera.

The military spokesman for the SPLM-N, Arnu Ngutulu Lodi, confirmed that government forces launched attacks in six different locations in the Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan on Sunday.

El Shami accused the SPLM-N of rejecting all efforts to achieve peace in South Kordofan, such as the movement’s refusal to sign the roadmap that was forwarded by the African Union High-level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) a week ago.
