Disease kills five children in East Darfur

Five children have died from viral infections and colds in the Jagara area of Sheiria locality in East Darfur.

Medical sources told Radio Dabanga that emerging cases have been classified as common viral diseases and infections, with shortness of breath and fever, that develop into severe diarrhoea and vomiting, and other complications leading to death.

They pointed out that the infection is airborne and transmitted by breathing.

Sheiria Commissioner, Siddig Abdul Nabi Hassan, has acknowledged the problem and explained that the locality is suffering a severe shortage of health services.

Ibrahim Abdullah Mohammed, the chairman of the popular committee for Jagara complained of the lack of a single nurse or midwife in the area.

He said that the area is also suffering from a scarcity of drinking water. He pointed out that the inhabitants of 12 villages must fetch drinking water from just three hand pumps.

Callers also informed this station that on Tuesday, a massive fire broke out in Sheiria, which completely destroyed about 80 homes, as well as large quantities of food and agricultural crops of corn and millet.
