More students opposing Darfur referendum held in custody

Four students were detained in El Radoom in South Darfur when they organised a protest against the referendum in Darfur on Wednesday. An other student is in custody in Khartoum.

The four led a campaign in the streets of El Radoom, gathering people to join and publicly denounce the holding of the administrative referendum in Darfur this week.

Agents of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) detained the students and they are hold in the security offices, family members told Radio Dabanga.

The families fear that NISS agents will treat their children badly and abuse them.

A family member demanded from the authorities to release the students immediately, or charge them with crimes so they can be brought to justice.

Khartoum

Members of the NISS detained student Wefak Gurashi of the University of Khartoum on Thursday for her support to injured students in the hospital who protested against relocation plans of the university this week.

Gurashi is politically active in the university and supports the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP). On Thursday she was in the academic hospital in El Sahafa visiting wounded fellow students, where she was detained.

The Secretary-General of the SCP informed Radio Dabanga about her detention. She is held at an unknown destination.
