Homeless children burn to death in North Darfur

Two homeless children have died in a fire in an empty bus in El Fasher in North Darfur.

An official of El Fasher locality reported in a press statement that the bus had been abandoned for six months.

Executive director Abdelrahim Mohamed Ahamdai pledged to work to prevent vehicle owners from abandoning them for the homeless.

“Homelessness has become a concern for El Fasher locality,” Ahamdai said. “The reality is that the problem is exacerbated by the number of displaced people in Darfur.”

He said that the locality attempts to address the homelessness issue through the establishment of social care homes.

4,500 homeless orphans

Last year, humanitarian workers warned of a growing number of orphans and homeless in South Darfur, owing to the ongoing attacks and tribal conflicts. According to a state government official in May 2015, there were about 4,000 homeless, orphaned children in South Darfur. Six months later, a researcher at the Ministry’s Social Welfare department reported that their number expanded with 500 homeless orphans.
