Darfur Peace Office welcomes rebels, sticks to DDPD

The Darfur Peace Office on Wednesday welcomed the step taken by the Darfur rebel movements, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM-MM), toward consultation with the joint mediation on their intention to join the peace process in Darfur.

In a statement from Khartoum on Wednesday the office reaffirmed that the mediation represented in the African Union and the State of Qatar remain the only body approved by Africa, Arab and international worlds to continue the negotiators on joint the peace process, the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reports.

“…the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur remains the basis for any negotiations aimed to joining the peace process in Darfur…”

The statement adds that the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) remains the basis for any negotiations aimed to joining the peace process in Darfur.

The office underlined that the Doha articles remains unchangeable and could not be renegotiated, reaffirming that the Sudanese government has expressed its readiness to listen to the movements about any concerns or issues of interest to them that have not been promptly remedied by the DDPD.

Absorb rebel forces

It said the government of Sudan has also expressed readiness to absorb the forces of the two movements and to include them within the political participation process for both of them within the context of the national arrangements to be agreed upon by the political forces currently engaged in the National Dialogue.

The office renewed the call on the two rebel movements “to tilt to the option of wisdom and reason and the participation in achieving stability and development in Darfur the circle of which has now been expanding , as is the case with the country altogether”.
