Policemen accused in students’ murder case

The Ministry of Justice's general counsellor lifted the immunity of accused policemen in the preparations of a court case on the murder of four university students in 2012. The parents of the students decided to close the case after receiving a financial compensation.
Counsellor Mohamed Ahmed Ali said that investigations into the incidents, which claimed the lives of four Darfuri students from the University of El Gezira in 2012, proved the involvement of policemen in the killing of the students.
The independent El Taghyeer electronic newspaper quoted Ali as saying that prosecutors had lifted the immunity of the accused in preparation for trial, on Thursday.
The general counsellor then gave the parents and guardians of the students the option between litigation or the payment of a financial compensation. The parents have accepted the compensation.
After 19 continuous meetings with the relatives of the dead, each one was given SDG100,000 ($16,335) and the file has been closed, Ali said.
In December 2012, the bodies of the four students were found in a water way in Wad Madani after an 'anti-tuition fee' protest took place at Gezira University. The deaths sparked demonstrations by students at several universities in Sudan.
