An elderly sheikh was killed, several livestock died, and homes were destroyed in two days of air raids on Darfur’s Jebel Marra.
Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that Sheikh Abdel Shakoor Ahmed Eisa (75) died and three cottages were burned on Wednesday, when an Antonov aircraft of the Sudanese Air Force dropped seven bombs on the village of Tringa, five kilometres west of Sorong in Darfur’s Jebel Marra.
Callers told this station that at 8 am, the Air Force then bombed Kelley village, ten kilometres west of Sorong that led to the deaths of seven goats.
Bombing also caused the death of 12 donkeys and sparked panic among the villagers of Njama, 25 kilometres from Tur.
On Tuesday, bombs fell on Turrentora and Turrentanaga villages, 30 kilometres south of Sorong.
The Antonovs concerned are ageing (production of the An-12 ended in 1973) transport aircraft that have been retrofitted as bombers. Very unsophisticated and equally inaccurate and thus indiscriminate; barrel bombs are simply rolled out of the cargo hatch.
